How to Tune with Thump

Place the Phone Close

Hold the microphone 2-3 inches from the drum, slightly above rim height, aimed toward the head. Keep the phone off the shell, stand, or floor.

Tune the Batter Head

Start with the playing head. Tap near each lug, make small key turns, and bring the lugs into the same general range.

Tune the Resonant Head

Tune the bottom or snare-side head after the batter head. A slightly higher resonant head often gives cleaner sustain and response.

Common Questions

Why does Thump need microphone access?

Thump uses the microphone to listen for a drum hit and estimate the detected pitch. Microphone access is required for tuning.

What if the detected pitch jumps around?

Move the phone closer, mute nearby drums, wait for cymbals and room noise to fade, and use one clean hit at a time.

Should I always match the exact number?

No. Use the target range as a guide, then listen to how the drum sounds in the room and with the rest of the kit.

Can I edit generated drum ranges?

Yes. Thump lets you edit batter and resonant head ranges for each drum, or add a custom drum to your kit.
